Get the "Scoop" on Boulder's Budget

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

On Monday, August 26th the Boulder Library Champions put on a community event to educate city council candidates and the public about Boulder's Budget and how to secure sustainable funding for the library. This event was well attended so we want to do it again-with ice cream this time!

Join the Boulder Library Champions from 5:30-7 pm on Monday, September 30th to get the "scoop" about the Budget. Here is why you should attend!

The City budget is overstretched. Costs to deliver programs and services have been rising faster than revenue growth for more than 15 years. Every two years, a new Council is elected and new priorities are set, resulting in additional initiatives and new programs that add to the budget stress. The City now has a long list of unfunded needs, many in core programs - basic services and programs that citizens rely on and which are at the heart of Boulder’s quality of life.

Our library is one of those programs - and it has been underfunded for more than 15 years. Forming a library district would free up at least $9.7M/year in direct annual expenditures for our library (based on the 2019 budget).

This fall, we will elect up to six new City Councilors. We think that Candidates and voters should be knowledgeable about our community’s budget needs - there are difficult budget choices ahead. Boulder Library Champions have learned a lot about the city budget over the last few years, as we’ve worked our way through tough questions and analysis around sustainable funding for our library. We’d like to share that knowledge with community members.

Attached please find:

The Scoop on Boulder’s Budget, a plain-English explanation of how the city budget is organized, why revenue shortfalls are anticipated, and what unfunded needs were  identified by city departments earlier this year.

The Scoop on Sustainable Funding for Our Library,  a review of our library's unfunded needs and how forming a library district can fully fund our library while helping the city budget.

These documents will be the launching point for the discussion and following Q&A’s.

We look forward to seeing you there!
